Jagungal Five Day Trip Report

Introduction

This article documents a five day trip around the Jagungal wilderness region between 27 July 2002 - 31 July 2002.

These five day trips have become an annual event, and a "must do" for the really keen teledorkers in our group. The route followed in 2002 is similar to previous years. In years where there is very good snow (like 2000), other areas are explored, like: Snowy Gap and Happy Jacks Plain.

Route

Day 1 - Start at Munyang and camped at Dianne Hut.
Day 2 - Ski from Dianne Hut to Grey Mare Hut via Valentine/Geehi River.
Day 3 - Day trip along the Grey Mare Range.
Day 4 - Ski from Grey Mare Hut and dump packs near Stumblo Hill to do a side trip to top of Jagungal. Camped near the Big Bend.
Day 5 - Ski past Mawson's Hut, over the Kerries and Gungartan Pass and down to the main road and back to the power station.

Day One

We arrived at the car park at Munyang about 10:30am on a beautiful sunny day to find a number of other people also heading out (mostly weekenders).

Approaching Schlink Pass
There's always a sense of anticipation when approacing Schlink Pass (mostly because you get a break from all the uphill climb).

Slopes near Whites River
So many good slopes to choose from, but we had to push on to make some reasonable distance on the first day.

Along the way to Dianne Hut. It's a nice easy ski from Schlink Pass and a welcome break on the legs.

Dianne Hut, aka Orange Hut
It's a pretty cozy hut, particularly for 7 people. One person sleep in the hut, while the rest of us were in the tents.

Campsite at Dianne Hut
Much better to camp on the main road than in a tiny hut. Hope the snowplow doesn't come around the corner!
